Dennis Helfer is a Canadian farmer, and Elaine Helfer, a Canadian woman, were her parents. The couple is of German as well as English heritage. She was educated at the William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler in Alberta. She had three sisters. Tammy, Tara, and Trena were also employed by her at the farm where she worked on her grain. In the age of 17, a modeling scout at an agency spotted Helfer as she waited in line for a movie.
